Today was a great day.
We got up at 5:00 and were out of our hostel at 6:05 again. Yesterday an Asian man fell out of his top bunk across from me. He came hobbling into the kitchen this morning as we were packing up and poured himself a coke.
It was pitch black when we started walking. We walked through Arcade and up into the mountains a fair way. We had to use our flashlights to see. It was so incredibly dark.
By the time we reached the top, the sun was rising and we walked through fields and pathways and through a couple of small villages. We stopped for tea and toast and sat by another pilgrim who was at our hostel the night before. He is from Poland and is making his own trail for the Camino. Odd.
Before we knew it, we were in Pontevedra. It only took us 13km! We knew that was what it said it would be, but often the estimates are wrong. It was just after 10am and we felt silly stopping but really, we had no choice. The next hostel along our way is 21km away and that was too far to add on.
We decided to cancel our hostel in Pontevedra and book in at a hotel instead. This way we were guaranteed a room to ourselves, it was right downtown and we could spend the day enjoying the sights.
We explored shops, cathedrals and restaurants. We came back for a nap and then we headed out again.
The funniest thing – after our nap Karis was the last to wake up. When she did, she bounded out of bed asking if we showered last night. We looked at her in confusion and she asked again, “did you shower last night???” We told her yes and she went running into the bathroom. We realized that she thought she had slept through the night and it was time to go! It was 5:00 and she thought it was 5AM! We kept it going for awhile and she even posted on her Instagram about how we were about to start the days walk. She finally clued in and boy did we laugh!!
We had a great dinner at a burger place and a wander through the cobblestone streets again. Beautiful place. Kind, helpful people. Really enjoyed Pontevedra. 🙂
